Live healthcare site constraints required a phased, minimal-disruption resurfacing strategy for the key access roads and parking areas at Orpington Hospital.
The existing carriageway surface had reached the end of its service life, with significant wear and deterioration affecting both appearance and long-term performance.
Due to the hospital remaining fully operational throughout the works, careful planning and phased delivery were essential to minimise disruption to patients, visitors, staff and emergency access routes.

The Challenge
This project presented several logistical challenges:
- Live hospital environment requiring continuous access.
- Works located on an active TfL bus route.
- Strict programme constraints with only four days available for surfacing operations.
- Requirement to maintain safe pedestrian and vehicle movements throughout the project.
- Extensive road markings and parking bay reinstatement required following resurfacing.

Our Solution
Smart Surfacing Solutions developed a phased construction programme that allowed works to be completed in manageable sections while maintaining access across the site.
The project involved:
- Planing off 40mm of existing worn asphalt surfacing.
- Mechanical preparation of all carriageway surfaces.
- Supply and installation of approximately 2,300m² of SMA10 asphalt surfacing at 40mm thickness.
- Construction and resurfacing of a new pathway serving the nursery facilities.
- Resurfacing of existing pedestrian routes.
- Full reinstatement of road markings and parking bay layouts.
- Installation of directional markings, disabled parking bays, pedestrian crossings and traffic management markings.
All surfacing works were completed within the allocated four-day programme.
